REI Co-op recognizes Girlz Gone Riding with $5,000 local grant
Woodland Hills, CA – May 15, 2021

In recognition of Girlz Gone Riding’s important role in encouraging more women to get outdoors through mountain biking, the Seattle-based specialty outdoor retailer REI has awarded the group a $5,000 local grant for 2021-2022.

Fast-growing GGR represents over 4,000 female riders in Southern California and Arizona and is the largest women’s mountain-biking club in the country. REI’s generous gift will be used to further support women riders’ skill- and knowledge-building through clinics. Former pro mountain bike racer and Mountain Bike Hall of Famer Leigh Donovan will lead the clinics, while REI will partner with GGR on the workshops on bike maintenance around the Southland.

Says GGR director and co-founder Wendy Engelberg, “I'm beyond excited that GGR has been awarded this grant from REI. This just shows how much REI believes in our mission and vision as an organization.”

As a consumer-owned co-op with 20 million members, REI invests deeply in the outdoor community, supporting efforts that connect underrepresented groups to the outdoors.

Leigh Donovan, who launched her company https://ichoosebikes.com/
in 2014, is an accomplished coach who has worked with GGR before to train and support its members. She will be providing multiple women-only clinics focusing on developing greater confidence and safer riding skills starting in the fall. Last year, she added membership in the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame to her list of accolades.

Girlz Gone Riding was co-founded in 2011 with 85 Los Angeles-area members. The group now has 7 chapters in California and Arizona: Big Bear, Inland Empire, Kern County, Los Angeles, Mojave, Orange County and San Diego.
