GGR weekend at Vail Lake Resort in Temecula was hosted by the Inland Empire (IE) and San Diego (SD) chapters of Girlz Gone Riding. This is the second year of our camp and bike weekend at Vail Lake Resort. Vail Lake Resort is central to our two chapters and makes for a perfect place to host a ride and camping weekend.
Friday – Day 1
The weekend began on Friday, when many showed up at Vail Lake to setup camp, relax, and ride the trails. Friday night was the first of our two potlucks, and many contributed. Stacey and Cedric Melcher cooked the main meal of spaghetti for all of us. A special thanks to them for organizing and hosting the potluck dinners.
Saturday – Day 2
The second day, Saturday, had people coming in for the day to ride with those of us who camped. We hosted Greenie 2, Greenie 2 Plus, Blue, and Blue 2 rides this weekend; many chapters were represented, with participants from the IE, SD, Orange County (OC), Big Bear (BB), and Los Angeles (LA) chapters. After the ride, the IE chapter hosted a subway lunch for everyone. The IE chapter hosts an annual fundraiser during the annual birthday ride in January. This year we had enough donations to pay for lunch for everyone, which allowed all the riders to come together to bond, chat, catch up, and relive the ride. We had a great turnout for the ride and lunch!
After lunch, it was more chatting, snoozing, pool partying, and preparing for our potluck dinner. Saturday night was a taco bar potluck. Lots of people prepared food, and a special thanks to Michele and Trent Martin (especially Trent) for roasting a pork shoulder all day. Dinner had lots of appetizers, sides, and desserts. We did enough damage to negate all the calories burned on that day's ride.
Sunday – Day 3
On the final day of the weekend at Vail Lake Resort, participants took part in a recovery ride before checking out of the campground. This ride was a chance to wind down and enjoy a more leisurely pace on the trails while taking in the beautiful scenery and views of the lake. We had members come in for the day to Vail Lake to participate in our Blue Enduro and Cross Country (XC) rides. The recovery and enduro ride were a perfect way to close out the weekend.
End to a perfect Weekend
The IE and SD chapters hosted this ride, and many ride leader volunteers came out to pre-ride to make sure the routes were suitable for the group. Last-minute ride adjustments were done because of a BMX Dirty Fest that was there that same weekend. A special thanks to IE chapter director Anne Yeoh for coordinating the camping, rides, and subway lunch. A special thanks to Kamala Slight, San Diego Chapter Director, for co-hosting our 2nd annual joint club ride.
This year’s routes were spectacular!
Huge thanks to Shelly Wilson Cheng for spending so much time and energy mapping out and pre-riding the routes with us!
Special thanks to the following volunteers, members, family, and friends of GGR: they helped cook dinner, stood by to help and support us behind the scenes, got us snacks, led, floated, and swept our rides!
